SUMMER HAIR CARE TIPS + GIVEAWAY

Summer is nearing the end of it's season, and with all the time spent at the beach, in the pool, or outside your hair might be in need of some TLC.

Let's talk about what you should do and how to get your hair fall ready and enter to win a fabulous giveaway!

THE BEACH

After a day of fun at the beach, you might notice that your hair is a little crunchy or bigger than normal.  This is because of the sea or ocean spray that your hair has absorbed and the salt is opening up your cuticle.  Personally, my hair looks wonderful after I've been at the beach because it's curly. But, sea salt will dry out your hair if you aren't careful!

THE POOL

Ah, the pool.  I love the pool because it's more accessible to me than the beach.  Put in order to keep nasty bacteria out, a lot of pools are filled with chlorine, and yes it is the same as Clorox bleach.  The chlorine not only disinfects the water but it raises the pH to be slightly alkaline as most bacteria can't live in that environment. Personally, my hair looks horrible after I've been in the pool.

NOTE: If your hair has been recently colored or treated chemically (perm, straightener), protect it from the damaging effects of the chlorine by pulling it up in a bun or wearing a swimmers cap or a shower cap.  Chlorine makes whites whiter and will strip out chemical processes further damaging hair.

THE SUN

Protecting your skin is a MUST but protecting your hair is just as important if you are going to be spending a lot of time in the sun.

The sun's UV Rays can penetrate the hair shaft and continue to breakdown hair's protective elements causing hair to feel dry and ultimately become damaged.

If you are going to spend a lot of time in the sun, wrapping your hair, wearing a hat or scarf, are some of the things you can do to protect and minimize damage to your hair.

Do's and Don'ts of Summer Hair Care

DO:
  • Wet it slightly before showering and use a wide tooth comb to gently comb it out.
  • Start at the ends and work your way up to your scalp, this will minimize any breakage that might occur
  • Gently Shampoo the scalp first and then down to the ends
  • Shampoo 2x
  • It's ok to use a clarifying shampoo first, but because it can strip the hair even further, your 2nd shampoo should be gentler.
  • Condition your hair starting with the ends and working your way to your roots because the ends are the most porous
  • Use a wide tooth comb to distribute the conditioner and work out any tangles
  • Leave the conditioner in your hair for 5 - 10 minutes if you can to really work to seal the hair and bring it's moisture back
DON'T
  • Use a brush before you shower, unless the brush is specific for showering and you've wet your hair
  • Use a lot of heat after you shower, if you can let your hair air dry and use a leave-in conditioner to fill your hair with moisture
  • Squeeze your hair dry in a towel knot, be as gentle as possible and squeeze only the hair with a towel, leave your hair about 10-20% wet

Either It's a 10 Silk Express Miracle Silk Leave-In Conditioner or JOICO Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm.  Disclaimer, you must "login" to enter this competition, you can do so by either using an email or a FB account.

JOICO Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm for Thick/Coarse Dry Hair, but I use it for an extra boost of moisture for my fine curly hair.

The great thing about JOICO products is that they are specially pH formulated for your hair.  Hair is about a 5 on the pH scale and the use of anything higher will lead to dry hair.  JOICO products balance hair's natural pH and provide great moisture.

I use it about 1x a week after shampooing 2x and then applying ends to root.  You could use a wide tooth comb to distribute it, or with your fingers.  Leave it in 5-10 minutes before rinsing out with cool water.

It's a 10 Silk Express Miracle Silk Leave-In Conditioner is a wonderful product that makes my hair feel amazing and smells wonderful.

Because it's pretty thick, I pump about 5 - 10 pumps into my hand and emulsify, then I start at the ends of my damp hair and work my way up.  Because I have curly hair, I don't comb through I just work through with my fingers and afterward I continue to scrunch my curls from ends to roots. I let the product set for a few minutes before applying my styling products.
